With the first edition of the Amsterdam Breaking Championships, presented by Odido & Samsung, Amsterdam confirms its status as the Urban Sport Capital. The Amsterdam Breaking Championships is scheduled for Saturday, December 9, 2023, at the Centrale Markthal in the capital city. Ticket sales for this new event are for sale.
Platform for the Breaking Community
The Amsterdam Breaking Championships is an initiative of the Municipality of Amsterdam, New Dance Media, TIG Sports & the Dutch General Dance Sport Association. The involved parties have the ambition to organize the Amsterdam Breaking Championships annually and expand the event.
A special stadium will be constructed in the historical Centrale Markthal for the finals of this edition. This unique event not only offers an attractive lineup for a broad audience but also provides a distinctive setting for the Breaking community in our country to inspire both participants and the public.
Format (Program)
The Amsterdam Breaking Championships will host the official NADB Dutch National Breaking Championship and international Crew Battles. Breakers will compete in a battle format (5 VS 5), taking turns to showcase their moves. The first crews and jury members have already been confirmed. Qualifications will be from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM and are free to attend for everyone. The finals will take place in the stadium starting at 8:00 PM.

Odido and Samsung, as presenting partners, are committed to contributing to the growth of Breaking as an annual event. Odido aims to make digital technology more human-friendly, ensuring that everyone can participate and enjoy it. Samsung, with its high-quality, human-centered innovations, aims to assist people in achieving what they once deemed impossible.
Odido believes in the power of connection and collaboration. “We support not only the (top) athletes but also connect the team behind them, ensuring they always receive the support they need to excel in their sport. Giving your all is never a solo effort,” says Leo Hensen, Director Marketing & Communications – Odido Netherlands.
“At Samsung, we strongly believe in pushing boundaries and achieving the impossible, from art and culture to sports, where Breaking is a magnificent example of creativity, sport, and expression. This partnership reflects our commitment to supporting and driving innovation, and we look forward to offering an unforgettable experience with this event to the breakers, the city of Amsterdam, and beyond,” adds Willem Visser, Vice President Mobile – Samsung Benelux.
Olympic Outlook
In 2018, the World Dance Sport Federation (WDSF) introduced Breaking at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, attracting massive crowds to the Urban Sports Park. A year later, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to add Breaking to the Olympic program for Paris 2024.
Dutch Breakers
There’s a strong possibility that several top Dutch Breakers will compete for medals in the Paris Games. The 17-year-old India Sardjoe has already secured her Olympic ticket, having become the world champion in New York in 2022 and winning gold at the European Games this year. Among the men, Amsterdam native Lee Demierre is a contender for an Olympic qualification. In 2022, Demierre won the silver at the World Championships in New York. Menno van Gorp, another known Dutch breaker, has proven his legendary status by winning three Red Bull BC One World Finals, a feat unmatched by any other breaker in the world.
All three have confirmed to participate in the Amsterdam Breaking Championships. Dutch Crew Champion 2023 Breaksquad from Gorinchem has also confirmed attendance on Dec. 9.
