What is Breaking?

Breaking, also known as breakdancing, is a dance style that emerged in the United States in the 1970s. It took shape at bustling block parties in the Bronx, spawned from hip-hop culture, and is characterized by acrobatic moves, clever footwork and the “key” role played by the DJ and MC during battles.

In the 1990s, international competitions were first held around the world, making the dance form popular among both hip-hop communities and the general public.

Breaking Crew Battles are an exciting and popular form of dance competition within hip-hop culture. These battles bring together talented dance crews who specialize in Breaking, also known as b-boying or b-girling. Breaking Crew Battles are not only a spectacular form of entertainment, but also a way for dancers to express their creativity and individual style while being part of a tight-knit dance community. These events have contributed to the growth and popularity of breakdancing around the world and have given the genre a lasting and influential position within hip-hop culture.

In 2019, the International Olympic Committee announced that Breaking would be included in the program of the Paris Olympics, confirming the recognition and legitimacy of this dance form on a global level.
